[ THE STORY ]

WHAT WE SAW ON THE GROUND.

Current Cause joined Carlos, Sam and the team at Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae in Māngere for one of their twice-weekly distributions. Over a ton of salmon and snapper heads and frames, destined for landfill, are handed out free to hundreds of South Auckland families who treat this kai as a delicacy. What began pre-COVID at 250kg a week is now around a ton a day, on track to redistribute 100,000kg of kaimoana this year across hubs in Auckland, Hawke's Bay and Wellington. It's a circular economy project rooted in whakapapa, manaakitanga and mana. Nothing of the fish goes to waste, and full bellies feed stronger communities.
