[ Our Team ]
Meet the crew.
A small team with a big love for the ocean. The storyteller, the filmmaker, and the legacy that lights the way. The movement is already out there - we’re just making it impossible to ignore.
[ TANE TARLTON - FOUNDER, SKIPPER & STORYTELLER ]
Tane, the connector.

Tane is a 24-year-old content creator from Aotearoa with a big love for adventure and an even bigger love for the ocean. He picked up a quirky 8.5-metre lifeboat, and he's got a wild idea: circumnavigate Aotearoa and create a movement for marine conservation along the way.
Adventure has been in Tane's blood since day one. Raised by his mum Fiona, he grew up tagging along on scuba diving trips around Aotearoa and the Pacific. They never stayed in fancy resorts. They stayed with locals, slept on floors, and soaked up the raw, real experience.
At 17 he left school with no roadmap and reached out to marine conservationist Pete Bethune. Before he knew it he was on a ship in Seattle with Earthrace Conservation. He was the youngest on board by 15 years, learning everything from welding to navigation, diving in freezing black water and raising funds for the mission.
From there he worked on superyachts for three years, building the foundation to take a big leap. In the last two years he's put every penny into telling stories that matter, building an owned audience of 110,000+ followers and reaching 26.2 million views across three solo case studies, with no team and no paid media.
Current Cause is what comes next. He sees himself as the connector, linking those doing the work with the people and resources that can help them go further.
[ CHRIS DAVISON - FILMMAKER ]
Chris, the eye
behind every story.

For something this ambitious, we needed someone who not only had the skills, but who genuinely believed in the purpose. Chris Davison is an experienced filmmaker and underwater cinematographer with a sharp eye for cinematic storytelling and a deep connection to the marine world. He has credits spanning broadcast TV, brand documentaries and tourism storytelling for national networks.
His company, Stills in Motion, reflects his passion for blending visual impact with environmental messaging. Whether underwater with a camera or on deck directing a sequence, Chris captures more than just images. He captures meaning.
He's also a qualified PADI scuba diving instructor (he used to teach on liveaboards in Australia) and holds an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence. He's an ideal partner for this expedition, creatively and operationally.
Chris is also just incredibly genuine and relaxed. He has a calm presence that puts people instantly at ease. Rare to find, and exactly what you need when filming people who aren't used to being in front of a camera.
[ A legacy of inspiration ]
Kelly Tarlton, the legacy.

A true pioneer in scuba diving and marine exploration. Kelly discovered and documented historic shipwrecks and created Aotearoa's first underwater aquarium - Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World - inducted into three international scuba diving halls of fame.
His dream was to share the wonders he saw beneath the surface so others could feel connected, care, and stay curious. Tane never met him, but his legacy has been a guiding light. Current Cause builds on that foundation, combining adventure and conservation to create something meaningful.
[ Accountability ]
Tarlton's
Current Cause
Charitable Trust.
Everything behind the lifeboat journey operates through our registered Aotearoa charitable trust. Built for transparency, oversight and measurable conservation outcomes.
Registered NZ charity
Donations made by Aotearoa taxpayers may qualify for a 33% tax credit through Inland Revenue. Funding supports expedition operations, documentary storytelling, community outreach, and direct support for ocean conservation stories around the country.
Clean trust structure
The trust owns and supports the charitable mission, including the vessel, conservation work, outreach, and story delivery. To tell the story of the journey, the trust may contract media and production services through Tane Tarlton Limited, Tane's independent media company, keeping the charity focused on conservation outcomes.
Independent oversight
The trust is supported by independent trustees, professionally reviewed accounts, and guidance from Sam Judd, lawyer and co-founder of Sustainable Coastlines, who have also gifted their Viaduct workspace as our office and event hub.
